Manager's Update

Ned and Mary are just back from a delightful two week vacation. We started off in CT with a family birthday party which is always a magical experience. We then went to Montreal via the NY side of Lake Champlain - just beautiful! We had a wonderful visit with Irena Peritz, watching the Health Bill pass, straight through until the end. Irena was as excited as we were and equally knowledgeable. We ended with a special dinner with Don and Jean Goldberg. We then flew to Weston FL for a week, enjoying a nice dinner with Nena and Charlie Hammond and lunch with various members of the Sawyer family....and 80 degree, sunny weather. So we now eagerly await seeing you all drive down that driveway on MDI.

Distinguished Botanist

Elizabeth Kellogg, one of our fantastic volunteer naturalists at camp, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences in Argentina, joining such greats as Charles Darwin.

Brand new Jr. Naturalist Books arrive for 2010!

Thanks to the huge effort of Peg Birch, there will be new activity pages along with Peg's beautiful drawings. Peg has been a Naturalist at AMC's Cold River Camp for a long time, and we are very fortunate that she has now joined Echo's Naturalists. She and her late husband, Dick, used to camp on the island every August which is how we got to know them so well. We are delighted that she is now at camp.

Our thanks also to Carol and Arthur Westing who did a masterful job in editing Peg's work, the result being a very professional booklet that we can be proud of. All of us are very grateful to the Westings: they have donated the printing of this new edition.

Aubrey Bart Published

Aubrey Bart is nervous and ecstatic about the publishing of his first (of many, we hope) novel, a work he has been obliquely, even shyly, referring to for a couple of years. It is available on Amazon.com.

Milestones

Engagements

  • Sarah Colby (ELC Croo, Assistant Chef and most loyal friend) to John Aprea - a wonderful addition to the Echo family. We love Sarah and John dearly. A May wedding is planned.
Deaths

  • Kristine Della Fera - December 3, 2009. How we loved her wonderful spirit. Kris was so special to all of us at Echo and will be dearly missed.
  • We are sad to report that Les "Jr." White passed away this February. "Jr." lived In Southwest Harbor and was a devoted friend to Echo Lake Camp and to the Mitchell family. He and his brother owned the Gordon and White Ford Dealer In Southwest Harbor. It was where Carrolls Pharmacy is located now. He will be dearly missed.
  • Alberta, "Bert", Edwards passed away on Saturday, May 22nd. She was the loving wife of Roger and a dear friend to so many Echo Lake Camp guests. Bert's bright mind and wonderful spirit will be missed by us all.
